Homework for 3/15/19:

Reading/Literature:  READ 30 minutes every night including weekends!
Language Arts:

*At this point, students should be revising and editing their essay on pit bulls.  This essay is due on Tuesday, 3/19.
PLEASE BRING THE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT BOOK TO CLASS EVERY DAY!

Briefly:  Framework for an argumentative essay:

Intro. paragraph:

*Attention getter
*Thesis statement (That’s it!!)
Body paragraphs:
*Start with a topic sentence (Split thesis statement in half — i.e. People should not be allowed to keep pit bulls as pets because they are unsafe.) — Or, create your own topic sentence.
*Give evidence to support your topic sentence (use the evidence sheet)
*Explain the evidence!! This is the part that many students are forgetting.  How does this evidence prove their position??  It’s the 'so what'??  You cannot arbitrarily throw in a quote from    the text and say that it proves your point.  Say, “This proves. . .  or This shows. . ."
*Give more evidence (we have 2 pieces of evidence on the evidence sheet.)
*Explain the evidence!!  Say, “This proves. . .  or This shows. . ."
*Write a concluding sentence (you can “flip” the topic sentence around for your concluding sentence — i.e. Because pit bulls are unsafe, people should not be allowed to own them as pets.)
Conclusion:
*Start with “In conclusion, “ and restate the claim or position (people should not be required to keep pit bulls as pets.)
*Restate each reason (make them strong statements)
*Explain what would happen if your argument goes unnoticed.

Reading/Literature:  READ 30 minutes every night including weekends!
Language Arts:  Argumentative essay is due Wednesday, 3/13.

Students are really struggling with the argumentative essay.  Even though the information is in Google classroom, I gave each student a copy of what is expected in an argumentative essay (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion).  I also had students put their papers into packet form:

1.  Argumentative Essay Framework
2.  Find Evidence (pg. 17)
3.  How to Introduce Textual Evidence in your Essay
4.  Argumentative Essay Sample

Students NEED this argumentative packet, along with the green Performance Assessment book, in order to write the essay.  The essay is 4 paragraphs total.

Math:  12.4 packet due tomorrow.

Science:  No homework
Social Studies:  Review section 3 Cornell notes and COMPLETE the summary paragraph (if not completed during class).  The summary paragraph should only be 6 or 7 sentences, including a topic sentence.  There is no concluding sentence in a summary paragraph.  The paragraph is written directly from the notes taken in class.

Updated Fri, Mar 8th
Happy Friday,
Happy end of the 2nd trimester!!  Just a reminder that your child will be starting a new elective class beginning on Monday.
Final grades are due on Monday as well.  To be honest, I am finding it difficult as far as grades for Reading/Literature.  There were approximately 8 students in each core classroom who did not reach their AR goal (a couple of students had 0 points.)  I think it is a shame to give an 11 or 12 year old a D or an F in 6th grade, but when the student doesn’t do the required work, what is the right answer?  Unfortunately, there are many, many students who have admitted to me that they are not doing the nightly reading and/or not reading on the weekends.  So, I want to make it clear that daily reading is a requirement in Language Arts.  It is part of the nightly homework and needs to be completed.  I would certainly appreciate whatever you can do at home to support your child in reading every day.  Remember, too, that they are not too old to be read to, or to have them read to you.  If your child is struggling with finding a book, please ask them to come see me.

Updated Mon, Mar 4th
Hello Parents,
Please talk with your child and remind them that they are in school to learn.  Disruptive behavior impacts the learning of all students.  Please review the following with your child:
1.  One person talks at a time in the classroom.
2.  Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.
3.  Think before you speak — if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it!
4.  Students are expected to follow along when the teacher is reading (whether it is our core novel or one of the textbooks)
5.  Focus your attention on the person who is speaking (whether it is the teacher or a fellow student)
6.  EVERYONE deserves to be treated with respect (this goes for students and teachers)
Both Ms. Harrington and I have a lot of curriculum left to teach before the end of the school  year!  State testing begins at the end of April/beginning of May, and we want to prepare students for what’s ahead.  THANK YOU for taking the time to talk to your child.  We appreciate your support!

Heart & Sole is a Girls on the Run after-school program that gives 6th-8th grade girls the tools to be healthy, happy, and confident. Heart & Sole is more than just a running program! The 10-week curriculum focuses on the whole girl - body, brain, heart, social, spirit - using fun games and activities to teach her how to set goals and boundaries, ask for and receive help, set up a support system, and more! Physical activity is woven in the program, helping the girls increase their strength and endurance for the Girls on the Run 5K on May 18. Registration is open!
