Principal’s Message

Welcome to Northern California winters, where Mother Nature keeps us on our toes.  While the inclement weather added much rain to our gauges, it also led to puddles and leaks.  With the help of teachers and district groundskeepers, students had a number of dry areas to eat lunch and enjoy some downtime last week.  This week, with the brilliant sunshine, it is terrific seeing kids playing sports and card games outside again.

iReady

As indicated in the previous Principal’s Message, our second iReady assessment window starts next week.  So that no curricular area is adversely affected, and to show our students that all teachers take ownership of learning, all periods will be decreased by several minutes as a schoolwide testing period is created.

Since it is our students who take the assessments, we will provide them the option of which assessment to take first, ELA or Math, and they may even toggle between subjects until completion.  The schedule will be adhered to on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.  So that students have the opportunity to perform their very best, we encourage students to be present and on time.  The iReady schedule follows:

Period 1

8:35 – 9:19 (44)

Period 2

9:23 – 10:05 (42)

Break

10:05 – 10:15 (10)

Testing Block

10:19 – 11:29 (70)

Period 3 (Early Lunch)

11:34 – 12:14 (40)

Period 3 (Late Lunch)

11:34 – 12:20 (46)

Lunch

12:20 – 12:50 (30)

Period 4

12:54 – 1:36 (42)

Period 5

1:40 – 2:22 (42)

Period 6

2:26 –  3:08 (42)

On a side note, with 1050 Chromebooks operating simultaneously, we hope that you can help us by providing your child with earbuds if at all possible on the testing days.  Of course we have a small supply of these in classrooms in the event students do not have their own.

PTA

A Goodwill Donation truck will be at RHMS on January 27th off the Pollard Loop between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.  While Goodwill will collect items, a monetary donation will be made back to our RHMS PTA.  The dollar amount is based upon the cubic space the items total and will help offset the cost to support such activities as 6th grade Science Camp, a 7th grade Citizen Scientist field trip, and an 8th grade promotion activity.  Please log onto https://www.ptarhms.org/ for more details about how to support the PTA as it works to support over 1,000 RHMS students.

Science Camp

Speaking of Science Camp, RHMS has sent two groups to Walden West this year.  While the weather was challenging last week, students were always under the watchful and supportive eyes of RHMS teachers and credentialed teachers from the Santa Clara County Office of Education.  We were in constant communication with the Walden West site, our teachers, and our district as the rains and winds increased.  With the support of our district, it was decided to send communication to all sixth grade families via email and phone messages.

So that communication of this nature arrives in a timely fashion regarding any situation, please make sure to update your phone numbers and email addresses with our office staff.  If for some reason we need to send immediate and mass communication to families, this is our district’s vehicle.

School Tours

We were pleased to take approximately 150 parents and guardians on a tour of RHMS yesterday during CUSD’s Open Enrollment.  For those of you with younger children, please log onto the district website to ensure enrollment procedures are followed.  For those with children in 8th grade, the Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD) will send counselors to our site on February 4th to meet with everyone as they schedule our current students for high school classes.  Please contact CUHSD with any questions regarding intra and inter-district transfers, course descriptions, etc.

Cookies with the Counselors

In an effort to share information with parents about counseling themes this year and counseling classroom presentations, on February 7th RHMS will host two informational sessions for families.  Please RSVP at the following websites so that our counselors may gauge the size of the audience and find an appropriate location.

Parent Education

On January 30th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, Marshall Lane Elementary is hosting an evening for parents and guardians to participate in a discussion called Screen Time Battles: How to Avoid Them.  It is free to attend.  The speaker will discuss topics that include:

  • Learn the pluses & minuses of electronics – Smartphones, Gaming, Texting, Apps, YouTube.
  • What should you expect by age group – toddler, early elementary, middle and high school.
  • How electronics can affect brain development at different stages.
  • Get ideas on setting reasonable, age appropriate limits in your home without a fight.
  • Learn what parental controls you can use and what to know as your kids get older.
  • What to do when things get out of control.
  • Sexual content – what should you know as a parent.

Construction

Final stages of construction at RHMS are in the works.  This includes the installation of lighting in the new parking lot adjacent to Pollard Road and grass seeding of a portion of our fields.  Fields are scheduled to be graded this Friday.  Once prepared and seeded, the spring rains will ensure that our fields will be in use when school starts in August.  Home soccer games will again be played at home, and our Physical Education Department will have access to all field space.  In the interim, we are looking at what we can temporarily do to the track’s infield so that it may be a safe and viable alternative.

In Closing

Thank you for all you do in support of your children and our students.  It is gratifying to witness the individual and collective growth of students and staff thus far this year.  With another eighteen or so weeks of school, we are eager to continue our work at providing an engaging learning environment for all.

We have great news!  PGE estimates power to be restored and roads to be opened by 3:00 pm today, Thursday.  The forecast does not call for any additional rain.  The gas-powered kitchen facility is still cooking up pancakes and spaghetti, and additional batteries are arriving to power lanterns and flashlights should power be delayed into the late afternoon.  Night activities, including skits and the famous night hike, are planned.PHOTO OF 6TH GRADE SCIENCE CAMP STUDENTS PEERING OVER THE FOOTBRIDGE AT THE CREEK BELOW.

In concert with the Santa Clara County Office of Education, the director of Walden West and their credentialed naturalists, and our seven RHMS teachers, your children continue to be in safe hands while experiencing science in the outdoors.

Buses will be collecting our students and having them here at the RHMS GYM at 12:00 noon tomorrow.

Warmly,

Ted Cribari

Welcome back to school and a new calendar year.  We hope you had a restful and rejuvenating vacation.  We are thrilled to see happy faces and hear cheerful laughs populate our campus.

Professional Development Day

Teachers spent the last day of December in professional development discussing essential standards, engagement strategies targeting all learners, assessment, and writing strategies.  Based upon feedback, we had a successful day and are ready to implement lessons and units that offer a breadth of quality instruction and learning.

Bike Racks

We are pleased to share that after conversations with CUSD, an additional bike rack will soon be added adjacent to the M Wing.  Closer to the catwalk, several dozen students may safely park there in early February.  While this back rack will be on campus and within our gates, it is important that students securely lock their bikes to prevent theft.

iReady

Whereas in previous years iReady was assigned during three windows, middle school students now have only two windows.  The upcoming window is the week of January 28th , and it will mirror our Fall schedule.  So that no curricular area is adversely affected, all periods will be decreased by several minutes so that a schoolwide testing period may be created.  As it is students who take the assessments, we will provide them the option of which assessment to initially take, ELA or Math, and they may even toggle between subjects until completion.

It is important to remember that the online iReady assessment is one way in which we measure academic growth and achievement.  Collaborative projects, individual presentations, and essays are additional ways in which students may provide evidence of achievement.  The results of the second iReady assessments will be used by teachers to track progress and make adjustments to instruction.

PTA

There is a PTA Association meeting Wednesday, January 16th at 7:00 pm in the RHMS Staff Room, an RHMS Dining Night at the Westgate Chipotle on January 22nd, and a Goodwill donation day on January 27th off the Pollard Loop.  Please log onto https://www.ptarhms.org/ for more details about how to support the PTA as it works to support over 1,000 RHMS students.

Prior to a condensed week of learning, we want to take a moment to wish you a happy upcoming vacation.  We thank each of you for such support of our students, all 1050 of them, as well as our greater community.  We see evidence of this support in the high rate of participation in this year’s Parent Conferences, and volunteerism at Math Club and Project Cornerstone.  Donations made to our CIA Turkey Trot and Community Toy Program have been tremendous.  That you track your child’s progress on Power School, communicate with teachers, provide a safe place for your child at home, and interact with your child do not go unnoticed.  The support here is immense, and for that we are thankful.  We wish you a gratifying conclusion to 2018 and a joyful 2019.

Professional Development Day

As a reminder, our students’ last day of the calendar year is next Wednesday, December 19th.  On the 20th, teachers will be at RHMS planning ways to implement the district’s Profiles of a Graduate and our site’s focus upon engagement, all linked to essential standards and providing students the very best instruction.

Student Academic Achievement

Comprised of multiple teachers across several grade levels, our RHMS Leadership Team has re-imaged the manner in which our students are recognized for their academic achievement as measured by the district report card.  After asking groups of students for their opinions, considering our district’s goal of leveraging Profiles of a Graduate, and speaking with administration at neighboring schools including those in Union and Los Gatos, our RHMS Leadership Team feels the previous manner in which students were recognized has grown obsolete.

Traditionally, an entire grade level has lost a period or two of instruction to hear the names of recipients read aloud.  The names of students earning 3.00 and above were often mispronounced, participants’ attention waned, and there was a feeling of unease if a perfect GPA was not achieved or an academic award was not received.  When parents were unable to attend, and the quantity of students prohibited personalization, additional students were affected.

Taking all of this into consideration, students with above a 3.00 GPA will still receive a Certificate of Achievement from their sixth period teacher in the coming days.  (The certificate itself has changed from last year, printed with additional text and the administration’s signatures to name two ways.)  Additionally, names of students who achieved a 3.00 or above will scroll on the monitor in our front office.  When our Tech Department upgrades the software on our marquee off Pollard Avenue, the same list of names will run outside.  Students will be able to see their names “in lights” as they are displayed alphabetically and with only the last initial.

As our second trimester concludes in March, we will look to keep the recognition fresh so that our students experience something new.  While we will continue with our Certificate of Achievement, we will look to work with our Leadership Class to update the associated “plus” by updating the punch card from previous years and considering additional alternatives.

Our RHMS Leadership Team feels that a report card is a traditional way of marking achievement, and that the traditional Awards Assembly has become less relevant than it once was.  With the Certificate of Achievement, families are still able to celebrate a job well done.

Student Safety

We have recently received reports about concerns at off campus locations, including the Safeway parking lot and the footbridge adjacent to RHMS.  Should you or our child see circumstances that are of concern, please notify the school or law enforcement if there is an immediate need.  We have a close working relationship with Campbell Police Department, whose officers are here to help support our community.  Additionally, please be cognizant of traffic patterns, as our students are vulnerable to the elements during the winter months.  We always encourage students to travel in groups or carpool with parents and guardians.
