Miss Perris' 6th Grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies

9/9/16

Hello Parents,

This should be the direct link to the Homework Email - https://rollinghills.campbellusd.org/perris-l....  If it does not work, please let me know.

Remember, the best way to communicate with me is to email me at eperris [at] campbellusd.org.  I will reply to your email within 24 hours (or sooner).

Both groups have now received the STAR Reading Diagnostic Report (part of the AR program).  Please make sure to have your child show the report to you, and then, remind your child to tape it into the back of his/her planner.  A reminder as far as terminology:

GE = Grade Equivalent = Example:  5.5 means that the student is reading at the 5th grade level, 5th month of the school year.

ZPD:  Zone of Proximal Development = Identifies books at the right level to provide optimal reading challenge without frustration.

ALL students have have been informed as to the number of AR pts. needed by the end of the trimester (November 18).  Students will be given some time in class in order to take AR quizzes.

Lockers were handed out today for those students who submitted a yellow locker form.  If your child would like a locker, they will need to return the yellow form to their core teacher.

Announcements:

1.  Please consider joining the PTA.  They do so many wonderful things for our students and for the teachers!  The 6th grade in particular receives funds for science camp, vocabulary workbooks, and much more.  We couldn't do it without our PTA!

2.  Science camp is almost upon us!  We will be leaving school on Monday morning, 10/10 and return to school on Thursday, 10/13.  There will be no school on 10/14.  Yellow
forms were sent home last week.  Please complete the form and return it to school as soon as possible.  This form is to be returned to your child's core teacher.

Additionally, the blue form (medical) needs to be returned to your child's core teacher. Make sure to fill out the form completely.  If your child needs to bring medication to camp, you will need to bring the GREEN form to your child's pediatrician.  Medication (including over-the-counter medications) cannot be administered without a completed form.

3.  Scholastic Book orders can now be placed online for your convenience.  Our Class Code is H3YRK.  The site is easy to use, but please let me know if you do have any problems with ordering.

Homework for 9/9/16:

Language Arts:  Forms (locker, science camp, etc.) need to be returned to your child's core teacher.

Social Studies:  We are working on our mini archaeology unit.  There will be a quiz at the end of the unit.  Date to be follow.

Reading/Literature:  I checked in today to make sure that everyone had an AR book.  Please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes every day.  I will do an AR Book Check on Tuesday, 9/13.

Students must bring their AR book to class every day!  Reading is a requirement for Reading/Literature.  It is not in "addition" to the nightly homework; it is part of the nightly homework.

If you want to find out if the book your child is reading is an AR book, please go to www.arbookfind.com.  Click whether you are a parent or student, and type in the name of the book.  If it is an AR book, it will pop up on the screen.  You will also be able to see the reading level of the book and the number of AR points it is worth.

I have already started making book selections for several students.  If your child needs help in choosing a book, please have him/her come see me.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Miss Perris
