Miss Perris' 6th Grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies

9/20/18

It’s Baskin-Robbins Thursday!!
We would appreciate it if you would talk to your child about the expectations in our classrooms.  Unfortunately, there has been too much talking going on and not enough focus on instruction.  Our expectations are:
1.  Line up quietly outside the teacher’s door.  Student should be settling down and preparing to come into the classroom quietly (one at a time)
2.  Student needs to be in their seats by the time the final bell rings
3.  Student needs to take out the homework from the previous night or the daily warm-up for the class (e.g. grammar review worksheet)
4.  Student needs to come prepared with at least binder paper and several sharpened pencils
5.  Student needs to sit up in his/her chair (no heads on the desk, etc.)
6.  Student needs to look at the teacher when she is talking (IMPORTANT)
7.  Only ONE person talks at a time
8.  Student needs to raise her/his hand and wait to be called on before speaking
There is a lot of material to get through this year, and it never feels like there is enough time to do it.  Thank you for your support!
I have been told that PowerSchool codes have been mailed out!!  You should receive them by Friday.  Thank you for your patience!!

Homework for 9/20/18:

Reading/Literature:  Green group only — Show AR Diagnostic Report to parents.  The report shows the student’s current GE (grade equivalent) and ZPD (zone of proximal development).  If the GE is 5.7, it means that your child is reading at 5th grade, 7 month (essentially at grade level).  IF YOUR CHILD EARNED A GE (grade equivalent) of 4 or less, he/she should be reading much more than 20 minutes per night.  I would recommend 30-45 minutes per night.  The ZPD shows the range in reading levels of the books that your child should be reading.  For example:  A ZPD 4.7-5.8 means that your child should not be reading AR books lower than 4.7 (4th grade, 7th month) nor higher than 5.8 (5th grade, 8th month).  ALL books in my library and the RHMS library have reading levels on them. If a student is not sure if the book they are reading is an AR book, they can go to www.arbookfind.com.  Simply type in the name of the book, and it will tell you if the book is an AR book.
READ 20 mins. every night including weekends!
