9/15/16
Hello Parents,
I need your help at this point to make sure that your child is reading every night. I am getting quite a bit of, "Well, I try to read every night." Or, "Well, we had a lot to do yesterday, so I couldn't really fit it in." Honestly, if a student is going to do any homework, it would be to do his/her reading! There is just no getting around it; students need to be able to read well in order to do well in all of their other subjects. Reading practice helps with fluency, vocabulary . . . but it also fosters imagination and creativity. I appreciate your support in encouraging your child to read at home.
We have the results for our green group's Student Council election. Evan Griffith and Ethan Kohler will be sharing this position. Way to go, boys! Congratulations to all students who asked to be considered for the position.
Classroom jobs have been assigned to all students! Each position is just as important as the next. It's together that we make this classroom run like clockwork. :)
This should be the direct link to the Homework Email - https://rollinghills.campbellusd.org/perris-language-arts-grade-6. If it does not work, please let me know.
Remember, the best way to communicate with me is to email me at eperris [at] campbellusd.org. I will reply to your email within 24 hours (or sooner).
Announcements:
1. Please consider joining the PTA. All parents are welcome!!
2. Science camp is almost upon us! We will be leaving school on Monday morning, 10/10 and returning to school on Thursday, 10/13. There will be no school on 10/14.
***There are still several students who have not returned the YELLOW science camp form. Please return them as soon as possible. Thank you!
Additionally, the BLUE form (medical) needs to be returned to your child's core teacher. Make sure to fill out the form completely. If your child needs to bring medication to camp, you will need to bring the GREEN form to your child's pediatrician. Medication (including over-the-counter medications) cannot be administered without a completed form.
3. Scholastic Book orders can now be placed online for your convenience. Our Class Code is H3YRK. The site is easy to use, but please let me know if you do have any problems with ordering.
4. A note from our district:
Nationally acclaimed local author Dr. Francisco Jimenez will join the community in celebrating 12 talented student authors at the Campbell Union School District's Rising Young Authors awards, October 5, 2016, at 7 p.m., at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Stevens Creek Blvd., in San Jose. Homework for 9/15/16:
Language Arts: We are continuing to pilot our new curriculum, Amplify. Today in class, we discussed the difference between narrative and expository text. Ask your child to tell you the difference between the two types of text.
Social Studies: We are working on our mini archaeology unit. There will be a quiz at the end of the unit. I do not give "pop" quizzes in any of my classes, meaning I will always let students know in advance when to expect a quiz or a test.
****Please note that we will always review beforehand. Students are not allowed to use their notes during the assessment.
The archaeology quiz will be next Wednesday, 9/21. At this point, students only have two items in their packet (look for the pink sheet):
1. Archaeology worksheet
2. Video worksheet
Students are to use their packets as a study tool prior to the quiz or test.
Reading/Literature: Please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes every day. Reading is part of the nightly homework. Additionally, please remind your child to bring his/her AR book to class every day!!
If you want to find out if the book your child is reading is an AR book, please go to www.arbookfind.com. Click whether you are a parent or student, and type in the name of the book. If it is an AR book, it will pop up on the screen. You will also be able to see the reading level of the book and the number of AR points it is worth.
I have already started making book selections for several students. If your child needs help in choosing a book, please have him/her come see me.
Teachers have been told that Powerschool is up and running, but it appears that some families are having trouble accessing it. If this is the case for your family, please have your child come see me.
Have a wonderful night.
Miss Perris
