Miss Perris' 6th Grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies

8/28/18

Hello Parents,

We hope everyone is doing well!!  Students are adjusting well to their new classrooms.
A reminder — if your child is in Ms. Perris’ 1st period class, then they are her “core” class (“gold” group); if your child is in Ms. Harrington’s 1st period class, then they are her “core” class (“green” group).
Important information for both groups:
1.  Students received their student I.D. today!  Picture Make-Ups are on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 (if necessary).  Your child needs to keep their I.D. on them!!  They can put it in a pocket in either their binder or backpack.  They will need an I.D. to check out a book from the library, obtain entrance into a school activity, etc.
2.  Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 5.  This is a night for parents only.  Classrooms are open at 6:30 pm.  The evening will end at 8:00 pm.  We look forward to seeing all of you.  Remember that our doors are always open, so feel free to stop by anytime.
3.  We will be attending science camp from Tuesday, January 15, 2019 to Friday, January 18, 2018.
4.  Flower Power Fundraiser - This is our first fundraiser for science camp!  Information was sent home with students.  With this fundraiser, your child will receive 50% of the profits they earn to put toward the fee for science camp.  MAKE SURE THAT THE ADDRESS ON THE FORM IS LEGIBLE because the bulbs will be sent DIRECTLY to the customer.  If you need more forms, please let us know.  Everything is due back on Friday, September 14.
5.  Regarding cell phones — there is a “door to door” policy where students are not allowed to use their cell phones while inside the school gates.  Cell phones should be turned off (not just on vibrate) and placed in the student’s backpack, while on campus.  Thank you for your support with this.  If your child needs to use the telephone during the day, they are welcome to use one of the classroom phones.
6.  If your student has not returned pg. 1 of the Parent Handbook, please do so as soon as possible.
7.  Make sure your child has given you the green sheet, which includes the list of classroom supplies.  THANK YOU for the donations that have come into the classroom.  We really appreciate your support.
Homework for 8/28/18:

Reading/Literature:  READ 20 mins. every night.  All students have a book at this time.  If your child tells you that they do not have an AR book, please have them come see me ASAP.
***If a student is not sure if the book they are reading is an AR book, they can go to www.arbookfind.com.  Simply type in the name of the book, and it will tell you if the book is an AR book.
Language Arts:  A Private Pause (6 paragraph letter) is due TOMORROW.  This letter needs to be typed.  Make sure to attach the parent questionnaire to the back of the letter.  I am going to attach a copy of a friendly letter template, in case your child is struggling with the format.
Review the grammar worksheet for Monday and Tuesday (5 mins. only)
Grammar Quiz #1 is on Friday, 8/31.  The quiz comes directly from the grammar worksheet.
Students should begin thinking about what classroom job they want to apply for — I’ll be teaching them how to fill out an application in class TOMORROW.  Students will work on a draft of the application (in pencil) in class.  They will be given a 2nd blank application (final copy) that they will need to fill out in black or blue ink.
Math:  Math workbook CA17, problems #1-9 and CA18, problem #17
Science:  Have your child share his/her Google adventure with you!
Social Studies:  Study the landform grid (10 mins.)  There will be a landform quiz on Friday, 8/31.  It will be a “matching” quiz, meaning matching the landform to its definition.  If I don’t think students are ready for it on Friday, I will postpone it until next week.
Have a great night.
Ms. Perris/Ms. Harrington
