Miss Perris' 6th Grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies

8/27/18

Hello Parents,

It looks like many of you have received the test email.  Thank you for replying.  I apologize in advance for the length of this email.  Most Homework Emails will not be quite so long!
This year, Ms. Kathy Harrington and I are teaming up!  Yay!  It’s been a nice start to the new year.  We have two wonderful groups of students.  :)
If your child is in my 1st period classroom, then I am considered their “core” teacher.  This group will be referred to as the “gold” group.  If your child is in Ms. Harrington’s 1st period class, then she is their “core” teacher.  This group will be referred to as the “green” group.  There is really no difference between the two groups; it is set up this way for attendance purposes only.  I will teach your child Language Arts, Reading/Literature, and social studies.  Ms. Harrington will teach your child math, science, and P.E.
Important information for both groups:
1.  Picture Day is TOMORROW.  These will be individual pictures.  Students will be given a student ID card tomorrow as well.  Make sure to either return the picture form/envelope, or you may also purchase pictures online.
2.  Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 5.  This is a night for parents only.  Classrooms are open at 6:30 pm.  The evening will end at 8:00 pm.  We look forward to seeing all of you.  Remember that our doors are always open, so feel free to stop by anytime.
3.  We will be attending science camp in January 2019.  More information will be sent home.
4.  Flower Power Fundraiser - This is our first fundraiser for science camp!  Information was sent home with students today.  With this fundraiser, your child will receive 50% of the profits they earn to put toward the fee for science camp.  MAKE SURE THAT THE ADDRESS ON THE FORM IS LEGIBLE because the bulbs will be sent DIRECTLY to the customer.  If you need more forms, please let us know.  Everything is due back on Friday, September 14.
5.  Regarding cell phones — there is a “door to door” policy where students are not allowed to use their cell phones while inside the school gates.  Cell phones should be turned off (not just on vibrate) and placed in the student’s backpack, while on campus.  Thank you for your support with this.  If your child needs to use the telephone during the day, they are welcome to use one of the classroom phones.
6.  If your student has not returned pg. 1 of the Parent Handbook, please do so as soon as possible.
7.  Make sure your child has given you the green sheet, which includes the list of classroom supplies.  THANK YOU for the donations that have come into the classroom.  We really appreciate your support.
Homework for 8/27/18:

Reading/Literature:  READ 20 mins. every night.  ALL students need to have an AR book in class TOMORROW.  Students have been given time in class to look for a book.  I have a fairly extensive library here in the classroom.  ***If a student is not sure if the book they are reading is an AR book, they can go to www.arbookfind.com.  Simply type in the name of the book, and it will tell you if the book is an AR book.
Language Arts:  A Private Pause (6 paragraph letter) is due Wednesday, 8/29.  The letter needs to be typed.  All students have assured me that they have access to a computer at home.  If this is not the case, please let me know.  CUSD will be piloting a computer take-home program, but that will not start until sometime in November.  Make sure to attach the parent questionnaire to the back of the letter.
Grammar Quiz #1 is on Friday, 8/31.  The information comes directly from the grammar review sheet (sheet with the days of the week on it).
Students should begin thinking about what classroom job they want to apply for — I’ll be teaching them how to fill out an application.
Math:  Share math workbook with parents
Science:  Look over the Flower Power science camp fundraiser handouts.
Social Studies:  The landform grid is NOT homework.  Students will be given an opportunity to work on it in class TOMORROW.  There will be a landform quiz on Friday, 8/31.  It will be a “matching” quiz, meaning matching the landform to its definition.  If I don’t think students are ready for it on Friday, I will postpone it until next week.
I think that is it at this point.  We are really looking forward to a great school year!
Have a great night.
Ms. Perris/Ms. Harrington
