**IMPORTANT CHANGE REGARDING STUDENT ID CARDS**

Our middle school student ID cards will have new information on the back.

A law that went into effect in July requires that we print the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on student ID cards for seventh- through 12th-graders in public, private and charter schools.

That number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

The law also says that student IDs may have information on the Crisis Text Line — which can be reached by texting HOME to 741741 — as well as local suicide prevention resources.

Lights.  Camera.  Action.  We have been preparing for the opening of school for several weeks.  The stage is set.  The curtain has opened.  Along with teachers and staff, WEB leaders will be welcoming everyone at a variety of entrance points.

There is much to accomplish this year, namely learning in a caring, respsonsible, and safe environment.  Your children are encouraged to strike up new friendships, be open to exploring new content, and recommit to doing their best this year.  Please communicate with your children and our teachers, as we want there to be dialogue.

In an effort to foster a smooth transition back to school, please be advised of the following:

  • With the new bus stop off Pollard, please plan accordingly.  Remember school starts at 8:35.
  • Please be cautious of pedestrians, bicyclists, and each other.
  • Uncollected schedules will be available in the cafeteria starting at 7:30 in the morning.
  • Establish a pick up time and location with your child over breakfast.

On Wednesday, WEB leaders helped make the transition to RHMS successful for all of our new students.  Leaders created a welcoming atmosphere where new students had the opportunity to meet peers, identify buddies, tour our campus, and learn about our RHMS culture.  Culminating in a bbq, a good time was had by all!

Experts agree, children benefit greatly when they participate in sports and activities: self-confidence, reduced stress, and many healthy habits and relationships that can last a lifetime.

We offer a choice of team sports throughout the schoolyear for students in grades 6 through 8. To participate, their parents need to complete the application packet, which now includes a doctor exam.

The after-school sports packet is available on our website as a fillable PDF file, or as a printed copy from our school office. It also includes a list of low and no cost health services locations, for families who do not have health insurance.  The packet is due before participation.

Dear Families,

Hello and welcome to Rolling Hills Middle School! We hope you had a safe and rejuvenating summer, spending quality time with family and friends. While we have been back for two weeks, we are eager to get our year started with your children. Our goals are big, and aimed at everyone whose role it is to support children and each other…

• Refining our delivery of engaging instruction for diverse learners

• Expanding the use of technology in classrooms

• Fostering a safe and caring community

• Embodying a growth-mindset, where everybody seeks improvement

• Improving outreach efforts to all members of our parent and guardian community

While educators enjoyed their summer vacations, we are proud that many here at RHMS attended professional development aimed at acquiring or honing skills to best empower and engage our students in meaningful ways. Professional development included:

• Writing with Design - a two-day program with six follow-up sessions throughout the school year aimed at refining students’ abilities to express themselves across content areas. While structure is the initial focus, students quickly move to style and voice.

• Mathematical Practices - a training focused on the ability to present lessons designed to ask students to think mathematically, based upon important processes and proficiencies.

• See Saw - a program for improved school to family communication.

• Technology Innovation Camp - a three-day workshop that encourages teachers to design innovative and relevant learning experiences built on essential standards, technology, and the CUSD Profiles of a Graduate.

• Profiles of Graduate - a two-day workshop aimed at creating field guides and rubrics for each of the five profiles at all grade levels.

• Exhibition - a think tank of educators exploring ways to implement authentic experiences into a culminating 8th grade project.

As indicated earlier, the best way to remain informed is to go to our school website at https://rollinghills.campbellusd.org/ or the PTA website at http://www.ptarhms.org/. Important dates follow. Please refer to the websites for times as they are determined or changed.

• Schedule Distribution - Monday, August 19th from 12:30 to 3:30. These are available to families who have completed the digital registration and have a copy of the online confirmation receipt or complete a hard copy of these forms in the office. Please contact RHMS if you have not received an email with that information. We can only distribute schedules to those families who completed the necessary paperwork.

• New Student Orientation (WEB Day) - Wednesday August 21st from 8:00 to 1:15 in the gym

• First day of school - Thursday, August 22nd

• Back to School Night - Wednesday, September 12th from 6:00 to 7:30

We want to best support every student at RHMS. Along with a highly skilled and dedicated staff, supportive and active families best ensure our individual and collective success. Thank you in advance for all you do to support your child or children and all the children here at Rolling Hills Middle School. We are enthusiastic about spending the year together, seeing each and every child grow socially and academically.

Warmly,

Ted Cribari III, Principal              Amy Vanderbosch, Assistant Principal

Updated Mon, Jul 29th

As we wind down 2018-2019, there is still much assessing, learning, and celebrating going on at RHMS.  Students in 8th grade are wrapping up their state tests in science, while many classes are completing end of the year culminating projects.  We are planning for the 8th grade promotion ceremony and finalizing staffing for next year.  On June 6th, we will host our annual Notes and Floats and infuse it with an opportunity for all families to engage with our teaching staff and department curriculum.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony

CUSD has assigned our 8th grade promotion ceremony to be June 12th at 9:00 am.  It will take place in our quad, adjacent to our library.  Requirements to participate in the promotion include grades and behaviors.  Reminders of expectations were shared with all 8th graders through their ELA classrooms in early May.

So that we ensure a smooth ceremony for all 330 of our students and their families, we will run through promotion practice with our students on June 10th and June 11th.

Expecting an audience in excess of 1000, please plan accordingly; ask to car pool, and consider walking from a greater distance.  In an effort to support our families, staff will park their cars on our blacktop, allowing guests to park in our parking lots.

While the previous two years required students to be in gowns, that attire will not be provided nor rented this year.  RHMS will return to an expectation that all students who participate will don semi-formal attire, much like during the Exhibition.

Finally, so that families may have a better idea of when a child’s name is announced, we will read names in an alphabetical order, A-Z.

Notes and Floats and a Time to Engage

June 6th from 4:15 to 5:15, we welcome families to campus for an opportunity to engage with teachers and curriculum.  The quad will feature teachers and in some cases examples of what departments have focused upon this year, from standards to projects.  Teachers will be present at this time, prior to our traditional Notes and Floats event where all bands and choirs perform staring at 6:00 pm.

To make the event that much more family friendly, the Music Boosters are bringing five food trucks.  We welcome anyone who wishes to attend and see all the great things RHMS has done this year, while hearing a collection of terrific music.

RHMS … of the Year

We are proud to announce our “RHMS … of the Year” awards.

Mrs. Jessica Harris is our RHMS Teacher of the Year.  Her nomination letter included such statements as:

Eager to provide her students the very best instruction, Mrs. Harris has actively participated in two high leverage professional development offerings at Rolling Hills.  While attending professional development is beneficial, delivering it is paramount… and she does just that.

Mrs. Harris provides leadership opportunities and supports our positive school climate by teaching our Leadership class and directing our site student council.

Mrs. Harris not only contributes inventive ideas to the site’s Leadership Team, she shares her instructional techniques with her colleagues as she opens her classroom to peer observations.

Mrs. Beth Burch is our Classified employee of the year.  Her nomination letter included such statements as:

Mrs. Burch is driven and has high expectations for all students.

Mrs. Burch does not give up on even the most resistant learner.  She is the definition of a warm demander who is both loved and respected by her students.

Mrs. Burch works hard at making sure that all the parties involved in supporting students are communicating.  She is often the conduit between case managers, students, and teachers- delivering lessons and scheduling time for students to meet for additional help.

Mrs. Suzanne Reese is our Volunteer of the Year.  Her nomination included such statements as:

Mrs. Reese cares about students, all students.

Mrs. Reese takes an active role in supporting students and families, helping coordinate the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot that raised monetary donations for families and hosting Open Gym during lunch where students may be active in a safe location.

PTA

RHMS is working with CUSD’s Business Office, Thought Exchange, School Site Council, its staff, and our PTA to coordinate the 2019-2020 budget.  Because our PTA was only able to raise $18,000 of its $100,000 budget through its Direct Donation Campaign, there will be cuts to what are deemed luxury programs for next year.

These cuts may include such programs as the IXL online math program, Accelerated Reader, 6th grade Science Camp scholarship funds, 7th Grade Renaissance Day, 8th Grade Awards, classroom supplies, and library supplies to name a few.  In the coming days, PTA and RHMS administration will share more details regarding opportunities to be present on campus and to help contribute.

Please log onto https://www.ptarhms.org/ for more details about how to support the PTA as it works to support over 1,000 RHMS students.
