Get ready: it's almost time to "fall back."

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, which means you will need to turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night Oct. 31. The annual tradition signals the official start of shorter days and, on Nov. 1, sunset will be around 5:08 p.m. CST.

We had a wonderful turnout for our first Family Movie Night of the year, featuring Hotel Transylvania.  Thank you to our PTA for hosting movie nights, and thank you to all the families who joined us.  Proceeds from the concession stands were donated to our 6th grade science camp fund!
We participated in the Great American Shakeout on Thursday, October 15th, at 10:16am.  Our students behaved wonderfully, and know what to do in the event of an earthquake.  Just a reminder: be sure to review with your family where to meet, where to wait and who to call when an emergency stirkes.  It's always wise to have a family plan!
On October 27th, large trucks going to the Rinconada Water Treatment Plant will be on Pollard and More Avenue as early as 8:00am.  Normally, the trucks are not in the area until after students are in class.  Remind students to be safe, always crossing only at the crosswalk and under the direction of crossing guards.
Last, but not least, I'm looking forward to attending the Marshall Lane Pumpkin Walk.  It is this Saturday, October 25th.  Our RHMS students will be volunteering at the Pumpkin Walk again this year.  If you can make it to the Pumpkin Walk, be sure to say 'hi' to our kids!

17 Rolling Hills runners competed in the Cross County County Championships at Montgomery Hill Park this week. This arduous 2.1 mile race includes many super steep hills. Rolling Hills runners were outstanding!
Our 5-6th grade girls team came in 3rd in the team division with Aneska Lee and Maria Cassiano finishing in the top 10. Once again our 5th graders ran with and against other 6th graders.

Rolling Hills’ only 8th grade runner, Garrett MacQuiddy, came in 2nd overall.
Rolling Hills 7th grade Girls team came in a very respectable 4th place with two top-ten finishers, Lynnea Garlick and McKenna Adams.

Thank you and congratulations to all our running Eagles for a great season!!

Starting January 2016, new incoming students or those students transitioning from elementary to middle school will no longer be able to provide a personal belief statement or religious exemption for immunizations.

Under the 2015 Senate Bill 277, there is provision for “grandfathering” students who currently have a statement of belief or religious exemption until they reach their next vaccination checkpoint – kindergarten or 7th grade.  A licensed physician can exempt students from immunizations.

For more information about immunization requirements, contact the California Department of Public Health (916) 558-1784 or ask your health care provider.

Safety first! We recently had a child fall in the crosswalk here at school due to the pushing and shoving that happens when large crowds of kids cross over to be picked up at Safeway. Please remind your children to be careful of those smaller and younger. Encourage your child to help by paying attention to those around them when they cross the street or catwalk, follow the instructions of the crossing guards, walk their bikes over the catwalk and across the streets, and to show patience. Not everything in life is a race.

Bike safety can always use reminders. Students have been wonderful this year about wearing their helmets! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Now if we can just get them to ride “with traffic” and not against it, our students would be that much safer. When riding a bicycle, you always ride in the direction of traffic. Riding on the wrong side of the street puts you in the opposite direction of cars that are turning on to the street- which increases the chances of a driver not seeing you as they make that right hand turn. Please discuss this potentially dangerous issue with your child.

And last but not least, please remember to show patience when picking up your child in our various parking lots. I know it takes a while to get through the crowd, but a car trying to cut through the line and pass others only creates an unsafe environment. As we always say “All kids are our kids”. Lets watch out for all our kids and drive safely.

Have a great weekend,
Cynthia Dodd
