School News
"The recent California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores reflect a ‘snapshot' in time of our progress towards mastering the Common Core State Standards, but they don’t tell the whole story,” said CUSD Superintendent Eric Andrew. “We are disaggregating these results and reviewing our other assessment data to pinpoint where we need to bolster our instructional practice and ensure that all of our students succeed.”
He added that schools start this year with the newly adopted curriculum in our classrooms, 1-to-1 technology in nearly all grades, and students who are energized by the project-based learning we are able to provide through community partnerships. "We are going to leap ahead this year,” he said.
As of September 14th, the testing company is shipping the individual student reports to the district office. As soon as we receive them we will mail them to parents. More information about the State assessments and a link to the data is available on our assessment web page.
On September 8, the State Board of Education approved key elements of a new accountability system that evaluates schools and districts in 10 areas critical to student performance. Read the news release.
The RHMS garden team is looking for engineers and/or carpenters willing to help students create and build the rest of our garden structures. Volunteers would be working with Mrs. Raghu (8th grade science) on Fridays, during school hours. We need your expert advice! If you are interested, please let us know!

Wednesday, September 7, is our Back-to-School Night. Your students will bring home their schedule and a map on Wednesday -- be sure to bring it with you. It's your schedule to follow from classroom to classroom.
The evening starts at 6:20 with a brief meeting in the Quad. You'll then follow your student's schedule going to each of their classrooms. PowerSchool parent access letters will be distributed in the 6th period classroom - be sure to get your letter before you leave.
See you in the Quad next Wednesday!

Helmets & locks are required for students riding to school. Students must ALWAYS wear a helmet and ride on the RIGHT side of the street when riding bikes, skateboards or scooters, and lock them up in the bike rack. If you do not have a helmet, please see one of the office staff -- we have several brand new helmets for any student needing one.

Welcome back RHMS Parents! I hope your summer was wonderful and you are sending your children back to school refreshed and ready to learn. If you’d like to know how their first few days of school went, be sure to ask open-ended questions, such as “What was the best part of your day?” or “Tell me something that made you laugh today”. You’ll always get more information if you stay away from questions with yes/no answers, like “Did you have a good day?”
I’d also like to take the time to thank you for your patience while we adjust class schedules. Our goal is to provide your child with the best education possible in a positive learning environment. We hope to have classes and numbers settled in the next two weeks. Until then, schedules are fluid.
Parents have also been patient in our pick-up and drop-off areas. Your patience helps keep our children safe around the many vehicles in those traffic lanes. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!
Reminders:
- Campus opens at 8:00 AM (gates not unlocked until 7:45)
- Cellphone use is prohibited during school hours on campus
- The new bell schedule has the same start and end times, but two separate lunches- one for grades 5/6 and another for 7/8
Always,
Cynthia Dodd
Principal, RHMS
