Literary Terms

Guidelines:

-I suggest the following websites in order to define the terms. However, if you choose to use another site (Google, Wikipedia, etc.) I cannot guarantee you will get the correct definition and therefore your final grade may be

affected.

-Websites

literarydevices.net

literary-devices.com

-define the terms in YOUR OWN WORDS!! Dictionary definitions well not score well; the skill you're learning here is to synthesize and analyze information and then explain it in your own words. Remember this example from class:

antagonist

Dictionary definition: An antagonist is a character, group of characters, institution, or concept that stands in or represents opposition against which the protagonist(s) must contend

Definition in your own words: The bad guy

Example: The Joker

-Don't forget that the example for most of the terms (you will not be able to provide examples for all as they may not apply; for example, "plot") MUST be one you are familiar with, not just one from the suggested websites or any other site you may use, and it must be from the realm of fiction, literature, etc. NO actual people today (we discussed this in class today so you should all know what I mean).

-This assignment will be graded on the following:

  • definitions in your own words
  • examples are original and known to you
  • writing is legible--if not, I will not grade your terms until I can read them
  • completion-all 31 terms are defined properly
