Science

Exciting changes are coming in science as we begin to understand and eventually implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). California has adopted a new set of standards which focus on disciplinary core ideas taught using performance expectations which will shift science instruction to a much more hands-on, project based learning approach. At this time curriculum has not been released to support the new standards so we will continue using our current Scott Foresman materials in Kindergarten-3, Houghton Mifflin in grades 4-5 and Holt in grades 6-8. We will take time to learn the standards and be ready to pilot new materials when they are released. The state roll out for full implementation of the new standards is not expected until the 2018-19 school year, however teachers in Campbell are eager to begin learning the standards and shifting practice to meet the needs of our students. Middle school teachers in grades 7-8 have begun working on developing instructional units using the NGSS standards which will be incorporated into the current curriculum starting in the 2015-16 school year.
