Spontaneous Speaking
This is a dynamic public speaking event that
challenges students to think on their feet and deliver a
compelling speech within a limited timeframe. In this
event, participants are given a mere seven minutes to
choose a topic, craft an outline, conjure meaningful
content and ultimately present their speech.
Notably, the speech is delivered without the aid of
notes and follows the traditional structure of an
introduction, body, and conclusion. What makes
Spontaneous Speaking truly engaging is the diverse
range of topics ("prompts") that participants may
encounter.
This is an exciting public speaking exercise that
demands quick thinking, creativity, and effective
communication skills.

Intro to Debate
Congressional Debate
Congressional Debateis an engaging and interactive event where
students immerse themselves in legislative debates, assuming the
roles of United States legislators. This mock legislative assembly
competition involves drafting bills and resolutions, which are then
debated, voted on, and potentially passed into law. Students act as
representatives of their theoretical constituents and consider the
interests of all American citizens.
The event not only encompasses the persuasive and emotionally
appealing aspects of speech events but also emphasizes research-
driven argumentation skills found in traditional debate formats.
By actively participating in Congressional Debate, students gain a
profound understanding of pressing issues that impact both the
United States and the global community. Moreover, they develop a
heightened sense of empathy towards real-world challenges.
Debate is a structured speech form that involves a formal
discussion between two opposing teams (or individuals) on
a specific topic or proposition. The objective of a debate is
to present arguments, counterarguments, and evidence to
persuade the audience and the judges that one side has a
stronger case or position than the other.
Debate formats can vary, such as Lincoln Douglas Debate,
Policy Debate, or Public Forum Debate, each with its own
specific rules and structures to ensure a fair and organized
exchange of ideas. However, the core purpose of debate
remains the same: to critically analyze and present
arguments, engage in persuasive discourse, and foster
critical thinking skills.
