Miss Perris' 6th Grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies

5/22/17

Happy Monday,

As I’ve been advertising, Miss Thompson and I are in charge of Exhibition, which takes place this Thursday, May 25.  I will be out of the classroom all day, although I will be right across the hallway in the teacher’s lounge, so I can check up on students.  We need help setting up for Exhibition on Wednesday afternoon from 2 pm till about 3:30 pm.  Students will be working in the gym and in the teacher’s lounge.  Please let me know if your child is able to help.  I have sent home some orange permission slips to those students who said that they would like to help.  If you prefer to email me, that is fine too.  As always, thank you for the support.

The Campbell Union School District's 39th Annual Writer’s Faire begins today.  The Faire will take place at the Campbell Public Library.  There will be a reception for those students whose work will be entered in the Faire.  The reception is on Wednesday, 5/24 at 6:30 pm.  All students, however, are welcome to attend.  Congratulations go to the following students:

Science:

Our earth science class will be viewing a documentary this week.

I had the fortunate experience to have caught this documentary while it was broadcasted new several years ago on the ABC station. I found it riveting and swore to myself that I would find a copy and show it in my earth science classes during our study of earth's resources and alternative energy. I have shown this film in past years and found that my students had similar reactions. The discussions that ensued were invaluable and allowed for real critical examinations on the part of my students.

This Documentary is a 'What if' synopsis of what will happen to our planet if we continue to use energy in unwise ways. While the documentary is riveting, it deals with some very concerning and intense topics such as global warming, overpopulation, and pollution. The documentary is also not rated. I feel strongly that all of your children are mature enough to view and participate in the in-depth discussion and follow-up activities for this film. I am attaching a link to the ABC website with a preview of the film for your information.

If you have a concern about your child viewing this film in science class, please do not hesitate to let me know. I will provide an alternative activity for your child. This film is slated to be shown in room B-4 possibly on Tuesday, and for sure, on Wednesday this week 5/23 and 5/24.

Thank you for your consideration of this film. I encourage you to view the film yourself. The discussion you can have with your very passionate children will be invaluable.
